Question No.: 19567

Subject: Antioxidants: more harm than good?

Question:
To "oxidize" or not...Doc- I too take a number of supps every day. Antioxidants spread throughout the day include Vit. C, Coq10, Grapeseed Ex., Resveratrol, R-Lipoic acid etc, a Multiviatamin, B's, and some wh.food ORAC mixes(berries, green tea, pomegranate, quercetin, sylmarian, etc...). I am wondering if not allowing my body to go through some of its "natural oxidaizing" is a bad thing. Or is this a bad thing not to "combat" the oxidation processes as much as possible? From a novice in the hunt for Longevity-Thanks much!

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
I take most of those supplements you mentioned, and it doesn't worry me. For one thing, the doses I take aren't that high- all within moderate ranges that are well studied. And I don't presume it suppresses every bit of oxidation going on, which is a constant process, a constant generation. So long as you don't take doses in the stratosphere, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
