Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 19507 Submitted By: BOB Submitted on: January 19, 2010 Subject: Sciatica Question: Doc- my mother who is 72, suffers from sciatica pain in her legs and lower back. I've read that vitamin B1 and B12 are somewhat helpful and seems to me that they would be fairly free of interactions as she does take Lipitor and is on Blood pressure medicine. Would these be best in a B-complex or individually in recommended doses? Is there anything else you could recommend short of surgery- that's the blunt answer she gets form her doctor. Thanks much- Bob Dr. Cinque's Answer: You're right about there being no interactions, but I would be surprised if B1 and B2 made that much difference for her. I really don't know what the basis is for expecting that. The most important thing is for her to be evaluated by a doctor to find out exactly what is going on. Does she have degenerative disc disease with nerve root compression? If so, then the Cox treatment offered by some chiropractors would be worth considering. I am also a great believer in Alexander Technique. I agree that surgery is a last resort. But, they do have newer, more conservative methods which are less radical than traditional back surgery. As for a supplement for bad disc, I would certainly make sure she is getting enough Vitamin C, which is involved with collagen formation. And otherwise, I would look to an anti-inflammatory formula, such as our Unizyme. Also, the ingredients in our Enflex formula would likely help her, and more so than Vitamins B1 and B2 (though keep in mind I am all for taking a multivitamin which contains those and other vitamins). |
