Question No.: 19228

Subject: bioidentical hormones

Question:
Dr. Cinque, What do you think about bioidentical hormones. Thank you!

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
The term "bioidentical hormones" usually refers to the female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, and I think that if a woman is going to replace those hormones, she should DEFINITELY use the bioidentical ones. These hormones are made from natural plant sterols that occur in Mexican yams. They are MUCH safer and better than the horse estrogen and the synthetic progestins sold by the pharmaceutical companies. But realize that "bioidentical" also applies to the DHEA and pregnenolone which are offered as supplements and similarly made from Mexican yam. Supplemental melatonin is also bioidentical, but it is made from the amino acid tryptophan. All of these hormones are absolutely identical to the hormones your body makes.
