Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 19167 Submitted By: DM Submitted on: September 1, 2009 Subject: Vitamin K2 Question: Hi, Dr. Cinque, I hope you can clear something up for me. I'm a 54 year old female. I had been taking Vitamin K2, 100mcg daily for the past 10 months for bone support, by Source Naturals. My friend, who is a pharmacist, told me to stop taking it because it was a blood clotter, and could cause a heart attack. So now I'm confused. Do I continue taking the Vitamin K2 or discontinue, as my friend suggested? I have had several bone density tests, one showed I had some osteopena of the lower spine. The most recent test showed no changes and was 'normal'. Your thoughts please. Dr. Cinque's Answer: Your pharmacist friend is wrong. Vitamin K is only a clot danger to those taking Coumadin, which I presume you are not. And it's K1 that's mainly involved with that. K2 is much more involvd with calcium metabolism. From what you described, I think you are, indeed, an excellent candidate for Vitamin K2 therapy. So please, ignore that pharmacist and keep taking K2. |
