Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 19144 Submitted By: Janice Submitted on: June 22, 2009 Subject: 1000 mgs calcium Question: You suggest that "500 mgs of calcium is plenty, and it's the most they should ever take, in my humble opinion." I have both osteoporosis and osteopenia; doesn't it seem advisable to take 1,000 or more mgs of calcium? I would be very interested in hearing your opinion. Dr. Cinque's Answer: It would take a book to address all the issues involved. But, I am just going to point out that osteoporosis starts not with the loss of calcium from bone but with loss of the protein matrix of the bone. The protein goes first. Osteoporosis and osteopenia should be seen as similar to sarcopenia, which is the age-related wasting of skeletal muscles. Osteoporosis is definitely not simply a matter of getting too little calcium. |
