Question No.: 19019
Submitted By: Plagued
Submitted on: May 13, 2009
Subject: dosage of BHT

Question:
Dr. Cinque, I have had "cold sores" since childhood. Thankfully, outbreaks are very infrequent but very painful and unsightly when they do occur. And now, fairly recently, I have developed outbreaks in the genital region. I don't know if this was due to contamination by another (my suspicion) or self contamination. Either way, I am very careful about my outbreaks and do my best to prevent spread on myself or to others. Due to the recent outbreaks in the genital region I have also stopped any sexual activity. I've stopped contamination possibilities of any type with everyone for their safety. And I have yet to be tested to determine my exposure to type 1 or 2 or both. I am intrigued by your site concerning BHT and the possible crippling or eradication of the virus. This might allow me to continue a more normal life. That being the case I would like to discuss dosage. I am a big guy at ~6' and 280 lbs. I see that you suggest a "maintenance dose" of one pill daily or up to 3 pills (~1000 mg) during an outbreak. I have also read on your site that 1000mg daily wouldn't harm you. Presumably that is saying that that dose for a lifetime wouldn't hurt a person. So the questions for you: 1. Do you think that a larger guy like myself would benefit from taking the max dose. The thought is to maintain that dosage for a while, lets say your stated 6 months to 1 year time frame, to eradicate any symptoms and hopefully provide a negative test. 2. Do you think that taking the lower dosage would fare the same benefit in the same time frame? 3.Do you think that taking the larger dose routinely would put me at any greater risks for any other problems? I eagerly await your response. Thanks, The plagued guy with new hope.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
I don't think you are likely to have any problems even if you were to take 1000 mgs (3 capsules) daily for a long time. If you look at the animal research, you see that liver toxicity does not appear until very high multi-gram doses are taken, such as half a gram per kilogram of body weight. That is a huge dose! Still, a lot of people do report effective relief and suppression at just one 350 mg capsule of BHT a day. I would definitely start with just that, since you have never taken it before. But if you wanted to go up to 2 capsules a day routinely, I wouldn't have any problem with that. But, I think if you were to go up to 3 a day and keep it there, I would run liver enzymes every 6 months just to make sure you were handling it OK.
