Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 19005 Submitted By: R.T. Submitted on: May 11, 2009 Subject: whole grain bread Question: Hi, Dr. Cinque- What are your thoughts on no-salt-added whole grain bread as a part of one's diet? Thanks for your opinion. Dr. Cinque's Answer: I eat some whole grain bread, and I agree that the less salt the better, although the one I eat does have a little salt. I have been eating lately the organic whole wheat bread from Whole Foods Market. Now, I admit that there are a lot of people who are dead-set against wheat and gluten, but it's never seemed to bother me, and I find it enjoyable and satisfying. I'm not going to discuss all the pros and cons about wheat, but when I look at the big picture, I recognize that it is a whole natural plant food; it is nutritious without being the least bit atherogenic (it does not cause heart disease). And, whole grains, including whole wheat, have been shown to be anti-cancer. And, whole grains, including whole wheat, have been shown to be protective against diabetes. So, I feel entirely OK about including some whole wheat bread in my diet. However, here's a little quirk that may amuse you: I avoid eating the crust. It's burnt; it really has no food value; and I don't like the taste of it. So, I pick it off. |
