Subject: ALC caused weight loss?

Question:
HI DR.Cinque's, i need your advice about Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500mg i've been taking it for about 2 month only one capsule daily with R-Lipoic acid for brain support but i lost too much weight. I'm 28 vegan and i was in a good shape before the carnitine and my question is there any thing has the same benefits for someone in my age as a cognitive enhancer so i can substitute it for carnitine? THANK YOU

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
Why are you so sure that taking ALC and R-LA caused weight loss? I've been taking those two supplements every morning for years, and my weight has remained steady. And I am 99 percent vegan myself. I've done an online search, and I have found nothing suggesting that either supplemenet would cause inordinate weight loss. In fact, on the University of Maryland Medical Center website, it says:

"Although Carnitine has been marketed as a weight loss supplement, there is no scientific evidence to show that it improves weight loss."

And you are only taking 500 mgs of ALC, which is not considered a high dose. So, I am a little baffled here and also a little doubtful that we can pin your weight loss on the ALC or the Lipoic Acid. I would want to know more about what you are eating on your vegan diet. For instance, are you eating too much produce and not enough concentrated food? Are you avoiding fats like nuts? Are you trying to avoid cooked foods? Are you consuming insufficient calories? I'm thinking there has got to be something else going on.
