Subject: neutropenia and low platelets

Question:
hello Dr. Cinque's: thanks for being always there for us. i have a question, i'm 28 years old and i have been diagnosed with neutropenia with mild thrombocytopenia, low platelet count, i wasn't surprised since I'm strict vegan. but now i'm about combine the multivitamin i take with Advanced Methyl Caps to add some more B vitamins. is this a good match to consider because the Folic acid will be 1600 mcg and if it's ok for how long? or should i take Vitamin B12 Sublingual, in your opinion? is there any precaution i should take for this case? Thank you so much.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
No, I don't think that adding Advanced Methyl Caps would be likely to help because there are enough of those nutrients in your multivitamin (if it is a good one). I don't take Advanced Methyl Caps, and I don't have neutropenia or low platelets, so why should I assume that you need more of those vitamins than I do? If your white cell count was low overall, I wouldn't necessarily worry about it because vegans often do run low. But, I can't think of any reason why a vegan diet would cause neutropenia. Sometimes, neutropenia is caused by drugs, even ordinary medical drugs. For instance, are you taking anything for heartburn? Those drugs can cause neutropenia. The Sublingual B12 is very good especially since it contains methylcobalamin- the most advanced form of Vitamin B12. So I take it, and I plan on taking it indefinitely. Considering the low cost and safety of it, you might want to do likewise. But as far as dealing with your neutropenia and thrombocytopenia, I would have to know more and find out more about you before I could recommend anything.
