Question No.: 18762
Submitted By: Anonymous
Submitted on: February 24, 2009
Subject: thyroid nodules

Question:
I have been taking one Iodoral daily for about 2 years. Recently I went to the doctor because of thinning hair. I'm a 55 yr. old female. He did blood work for my thyroid and said it was normal. Then I had an ultrasound of my thyroid. It showed 2 very small nodules. It was suggested I come back in one year and have another ultrasound. The doctor seemed very unconcerned about the nodules. Is there anything I can take as far as supplements to try and get rid of these two small nodules? Also, what do you think about continuing with the Iodoral? Also, my original reason for going was thinning hair, which after all the tests, I still don't have an answer for. Can you make any suggestions for that as well? I'm already on progesterone cream, DHEA (10mg.), multi vit., resveratrol, E (400IU), fish oil, Epicor, D3(4000 IU), GI Cell Support and CoQ10 (100mg.) Any suggestions as to what I should add to or take away from my supplements is most appreciated.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
No, I don't have any suggestions for that. Thyroid nodules can be associated with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism or with normal thyroid production. Regarding your bloodwork, there is controversy about what constitutes normal for thyroid. The books say a TSH up to 5 is normal, but some doctors think the upper limit should be 3 or less. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has recommended that the upper limit be lowered to 3. I don't know what standard your doctor was going by. But, if you've been on Iodoral for several years, I think I would give it a rest for a while, or at least cut back to every other day.
