Question No.: 18699

Subject: dark circles under the eye

Question:
Hello Dr Cinque, My son's girlfriend who is 23 years old has very dark circles under her eyes. She appears in good health, is trim and an all-around good person. However, she does smoke cigarettes. Is there a deficiency in her diet or something else that would account for this condition? Thank you, Aja

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
There are lots of different theories about what causes dark circles under the eye. A popular idea is that it's due to allergies. Do you know if the young woman has allergies? One thing is for sure: the dark color is due to blood, and if it's brown, as it usually is, it means the blood has been oxidized. Some medications can cause dark circles. Anemia can also cause it, and that's easy to check for. Simple fatigue, as in lack of sleep, can cause it. Dehydration can also cause it. And there is no question that age is associated with an increased likelihood of dark circles, which is why it concerns me when I see it in young people. Does her smoking contribute to it? I would say: definitely so. It's time for this young woman to quit smoking. And she should take the dark circles as a serious warning sign that her health is not all that good.
