Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 18581 Submitted By: Judi Submitted on: January 7, 2009 Subject: surgical menopause Question: Hi Dr. Cinque, I have a question regarding menopause and its after-effects. I am taking .50 mg of estrodiol. I am now on lexapro and lamatil for mood balance. I can tell you that I have not felt myself since my full hysterectomy 2 years ago. I am a 46 year old female. I have been very upset, stressed, agitates and short with friends and family. I thought the mood stabilizer would help. I have been on this medication for 2 weeks and am current at 50 mg per day. I was reading information abou DHEA and am wondering if that would help my sypmtoms. I feel extremely depressed and would really love to enjoy life again - like before my total hysterctomy. Thank you in advance. Take care. Judi Dr. Cinque's Answer: Well, I am not enthused pharmaceutical antidepressants, and I don't think they have any advantages over natural antidepressants. Regarding estradiol, I am not concerned about you taking that because I presume you are taking the bio-identical estradiol. Adding some DHEA to it might enhance the effect. I take DHEA and have been doing so for years. I take 25 mgs, but for a woman I would recommend taking 10 mgs. But if I were in your situation, I would really think about getting off those other drugs, especially since you've only been taking them for two weeks. I doubt that you could have built up a dependency in that much time. And there are quite a few things that you could try to help yourself feel better. Why don't you start using the natural progesterone cream? We offer the one that was designed by the late Dr. John Lee, a real pioneer in natural hormone replacement. And I still feel that SAMe is the best natural antidepressant/mood elevator. We offer a very excellent SAMe that is imported from Italy, which is the center of the world in SAMe research. There are other things you could try, such as St. John's wort or 5htp, but I would go with SAMe. It is so good for you in so many different ways that it would be worth taking even if you were happy as a lark. But for depression, it is still my first choice. |
