Question No.: 18402
Submitted By: cv
Submitted on: July 22, 2008
Subject: eye crust

Question:
Dear Dr. Cinque, Last week, two mornings in a row, I woke with heavy 'Sleep' in my eyes...the crusty matter...I was just wondering if there are any health causes of this suddenly happening. Thank you for your assistance.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
You could have conjunctivitis going on or more likely blepharitis, which is a very common inflammation of the eyelid ducts. Usually, there is pink eye with conjunctivitis. If it's blepharitis, cleaning the margin of the eyelids carefully with warm water each morning is helpful. If in doubt, see an eye doctor.
