Question No.: 18390

Submitted on: June 23, 2008
Subject: liver

Question:
Dr. Cinque, My daughter in-law took my 7 year old Grandson to the doctor for a check up and was told that he had the liver of an old alcoholic. In horror at the way the doctor looked at her she left and that was that. I know that she gives him 10 pills a day and this concerns me a great deal. Here is the list. Super Nutrition for Kids (perfect kids) Garlic Children Expec with Guaifenesin Herbal Expectorant. Chewable Calcium Fish Oil Daily Essental Enzymens Digestive Aid I see another one in his cabinet, but I am not sure she gives this one to him, (Super 5 Lozenge Probiotic-oral health. Part of what got her going was his snoring and his having a hard time breathing at night, so she went to the health food store and then she was on a roll. She removed wheat, dairy and soy from his diet, and he gets very little sugar, but he does eat meat of all kinds, a couple of veggies and fruits. Not a great eater. She also gives him honey as a treat, and chlorophyll in his water. I don’t know what else you might ask, but I would love to hear back from you and get your opinion. They live in Northern CA and I did give her Dr Sultana phone number, but it is my understanding the last time I saw him that he was not taking any new patient’s. Do you know of anyone out here? Thanks so much for your time, it is very much appreciated. Worried Grandma,

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
There is nothing you mentioned that makes me think in terms of liver damage. I'm not sure what that doctor meant. The liver of an old alcoholic is hard and small. So, did he feel the boy's liver and found that it felt hard and small? Or did he do blood tests and find elevated liver enzymes? Anyway, your daughter should definitely follow up with somebody, although I don't have anyone to refer you to out there.
