Question No.: 18381
Submitted By: mh
Submitted on: June 12, 2008
Subject: BHT

Question:
I take fioricet, which contains a barbiturate, on occasion for headaches. Will it be harmful to take BHT along with this? I read that BHT is harmful when combined with alcohol or some barbiturates. Also, in the treatment of herpes, what dose do I need to take of BHT (how many, for how long?) and do I only take it during an outbreak? Thank you for your help with my questions.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
Well, you definitely should not combine BHT with alcohol. I don't know about that specific drug, but just to be safe, you better not take it with BHT. Regarding dosing, up to 1000 mgs of BHT a day is considered safe, but I would only take that much during outbreaks. The rest of the time I would take just one capsule a day, which is 350 mgs. I would be prepared to stay on it for a full year.
