Question No.: 18379
Submitted By: St. Louis
Submitted on: June 7, 2008
Subject: Beta Glucan and Epicor together

Question:
Dr.Cinque. The varous VRN articles on Epicor and Beta Glucan seem to show a complementary immuno-enhancing action of the two substances in that both act as "biological response modifiers" by "facilitating cell-to-cell communication". In view of this, would you consider it a good idea to use both supplements, especially during the "peak" colds/flu season? For the last two and a half years I have been using Epicor (one 500mg capsule faithfully each day) and I have gotten sick to the point of needing antibiotics only once. Previously, I was getting 2-3 more or less severe upper-respiratory infections every year, even when I was considerably younger. I am 80 now. In your opinion, would adding Beta-glucan to the regimen be of further help? Thank you.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
It's interesting that you should suggest this because very recently I recommended both Beta Glucan and Epicor to an immune-compromised young man. And last winter, I had my mother taking both, and she is older than you are: almost 87. What's outstanding about this combination is not only their complementarity, but also their complete safety. Both provide a natural, nutritional enhancement of the immune system, rather than a pharmaceutical one. If I thought that my immune system needed support (because of a propensity to infection, which fortunately I don't have) Beta Glucan and Epicor would be the products I would take.
