Question No.: 18373
Submitted By: cv
Submitted on: May 29, 2008
Subject: grapefruit

Question:
Dear Dr. Cinque, Will eating grapefruit (I eat 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at lunch) does it keep my multi-vitamin and calcium supplements from absorbing or is this only true with some prescription drugs? Thank you very much for your knowledge and time!

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
No, that only applies to certain drugs, such as statin drugs and a few others. There is no problem consuming grapefruit when you take multivitamins, and as for calcium, grapefruit is likely to increase its absorption because of the citric acid.
