Subject: glucose tolerance test for pregnant woman?

Question:
Hello, Do you think it is necessary for a pregnant woman who eats a healthy diet to undergo the test where she is forced to drink a large amount of sugar water and then have her blood sugar tested? I would never drink a soda or fruit punch or anything like that and cringe at the thought of drinking the refined sugar. Also, can a woman play tennis while pregnant? Thanks so much for your advice.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
No, it is not necessary, and even if diabetes is suspected, it can be tested for without doing what you described. There is no good reason to consume that sugary junk. So, I would say no to it. But I'm not keen on a pregnant woman playing tennis. Tennis is very hard on the body, even when you're not pregnant. It's very easy to strain yourself playing tennis. And of course, if you fell, that could be worse. Why take a chance? You can walk and swim. Riding a recumbent bicycle would also be good, if you have a safe place to do it, and even a regular bicycle would be OK so long as you can ride upright and have a broad comfortable seat.
