Question No.: 18367

Subject: cod liver oil and beta carotene

Question:
I am taking a cod liver oil supplement every day, if I also take a beta carotine supplement will I be in danger of vitamin A poisoning?

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
You are never really in danger of Vitamin A poisoning from beta carotene because it has to be converted into Vitamin A, and your body won't make the conversion if it doesn't need it. However, I don't have any enthusiasm for taking beta carotene supplements because there is so much of it in food. Not only orange foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, and butternut squash, but also all green leafy vegetables, like broccoli and spinach, are loaded with beta carotene. In fact, you can get enough beta carotene from foods alone to turn yourself distinctly orange! So really, there should be no need to take beta carotene supplements.
