Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 18361 Submitted By: John Submitted on: May 4, 2008 Subject: magnesium stearate Question: How bad is the magnesium stearate in supplements ? Dr. Cinque's Answer: Magnesium stearate is the salt of magnesium with stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid. It's generally considered safe and harmless in the amounts that it is commonly consumed. It is very widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and in the making of nutritional supplements. Tablets, in particular, contain magnesium stearate as a filler and binding agent. That's one of the reasons why VRP uses capsules. I think it's a good idea to try to minimize your consumption of magnesium stearate. The magnesium is surely harmless, but I'm not so sure about the stearic acid. Also, I think it's a good idea to make sure that whatever little magnesium stearate you consume is entirely from plants sources and not animals. VRP uses no magnesium stearate as a binder or filler, but a very tiny amount is used as a flowing agent- so that the nutritional powders move through the machines properly. This entails a much lower amount of magnesium stearate winding up in the finished product than with conventional production methods. And the magnesium stearate they use is entirely from plants. |
