Question No.: 18359
Submitted By: vm
Submitted on: April 24, 2008
Subject: Endocet

Question:
Dear Dr. Cinque, I have been on Endocet for sometime now and would like to get off it as I feel I am addicted. I am taking with the advice of a doctor but I still feel I shouldn't be taking it on a daily basis. I have read L-Tyrosine helps and DLPA help, but do they really and at what mg? I have gone off these before and it is really tough. Any advice you can give me will be quite welcome. Also, I do believe I am depressed due to the pain and the treatment not to mention a bad breakup. Please advise on the best way to overcome the withdrawals and feel good better faster. Thank you, VM

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
Endocet is a heavy-duty narcotic pain reliever, so I really don't know of anything in the natural realm that is going to replace it. Yes, you could try DL Phenylalanine or Tyrosine (probably the former would be better). I know that our medical director, Dr. Ward Dean, often recommends Lithium Orotate to people in chronic pain because of its nerve stabilizing effects. It often makes the pain more tolerable. And you could take it in addition to DL Phenylalanine. And to help with the withdrawal, you could take L-Theanine, which is the calming amino acid from green tea. My favorite natural antidepressant is still SAM-e. I share your concern about needing to get off of that dangerous drug, and I think you should make it a priority in your life. I would.
