Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 18358 Submitted By: Susan Submitted on: April 21, 2008 Subject: DMSA dosing Question: Dear Dr.Cinque, I am a bit confused about the dosage of DMSA for heavy metal poisioning. My doctor says 500mg three days a week but my daughter is taking it every other day. Andrew Cutler's book on Amagalam Ilness says NEVER take DMSA every other day as it can reverse back into the cells when you stop for a day or so. He states it should be taken in 50mg. dose or 100mg dose every 4 hours for 4-14 days and then take a break. Would you know anything about this? Thanking you in advance, Susan Dr. Cinque's Answer: There are many difference of opinion about how best to take DMSA. But our medical director, Dr. Ward Dean, who is one of the most experienced chelation doctors in the world, starts with 100 mgs taken three times taken every other day for a minimum of 5 weeks. DMSA can be irritating to the stomach, and he likes to be conservative with it, even if it takes longer. It does not make sense to me that mercury would reverse back into the cells on the off days. The mercury, bound to DMSA, comes out in the urine within 24 hours, so how is it going to reverse back? And with a child, you really do have to insure that it doesn't cause gastric irritation since children are more delicate. Also, I do not think that parents should treat children with DMSA. They should always work with a doctor. |
