Question No.: 18339
Submitted By: Carolyn
Submitted on: April 15, 2008
Subject: Zoloft withdrawal

Question:
I have been taking Zoloft for 5 years. I want to stop it and take fish oil, and phenylalanine instead. What is your advice for this and how do I get off zoloft. Thank you

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
You really should work with a doctor coming off of Zoloft. And as far as a replacement, you could try phenylalanine, but it's a little stimulating, much like coffee. Personally, I much prefer SAMe as a natural antidepressant. Nothing works for everybody, but I think SAMe is a much better first choice. What I would do if it were me is start taking SAMe with the Zoloft, and then after two weeks, cut the Zoloft in half for a week or so, and then take that amount every other day for a week or so, and then stop it completely as I continue taking the SAMe and the fish oil. But as I said, I think it's best to work with a doctor.
