Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 18335 Submitted By: Ellie Submitted on: April 1, 2008 Subject: Benecol for plant sterols? Question: I started using Benecol chews two weeks ago and then the Dr I go to said that it was a good product so keep them and use them but it sure takes awhile for the Cholesterol to come down.I take it you are not for this benecol but does it have anything in it to harm a person?? thanks much. sincerely Ellie Dr. Cinque's Answer: I wouldn't bother with Benecol myself. It has sugar, corn syrup, and dried milk, (which are bad) plus the plant sterols (which are good). You'd be better off just taking Beta-sitosterol, which is the preeminent plant sterol. In fact, you can do very well just targeting specific foods rich in plant sterols, such as raw almonds, oats, soybeans, and chickpeas. Of corse, eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables is also desirable and necessary. |
