Question No.: 18321
Submitted By: carmelina
Submitted on: March 4, 2008
Subject: depression in cycles

Question:
My depression comes seasonally and over 40years I have not learned yet to deal with it apart from lite therapy and antidepressants. It is always the same devastatingly regular and I cannot stop it happening, lasts for 3 months and then disappears again until the next one. I live alonge and am very content and active in the well periods and then woooosh I begin the downward spiral I cant concentrate, cant cope with my normal social life, cancel everything and hibernate and sleep sleep and sleep until it passes, then I begin to live again, I have no stresses at all, no debts, no partners, no kids, no animals, nothing to stress me and I go about doing what I can for mankind etc. etc. SO WHERE DOES IT COME FROM AND WHY IS IT SO DEVASTATING?

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
I don't know why this keeps happening to you, and I won't speculate about it. But if it were me, I would take SAMe and Fish Oil and Theanine, for sure. But there are other natural mood elevators you might consider, for instance, you might benefit from Rhodiola, the Russian adaptogen. And I would take sunlight and exercise, and I would seek a form of counseling known as Cognitive Therapy. And you may want to consider having a hormonal evaluation done and be open to hormone replacement. For instance, DHEA has been shown to have mood elevating effects, and it's very safe.
