Question No.: 18309
Submitted By: Colonic Cleanse
Submitted on: February 12, 2008
Subject: colon cleanser

Question:
Dr. Cinque, I am trying to find the best colon cleanse method that exists. I know "best" will bring many responses. I am interested in your response. I'm 75 years old and in reasonably healthy condition. I know, however, that the years of eating without intelligence has brought my body down. I'm more interested in improving myself and I believe that cleansing my system would be a good start. Thank you, Alan Wright Aurora, IL

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
I don't see any good reason for you to get involved with colon cleansers just for the heck of it- not even to undo the effects of years of bad eating. Just start eating right, which means lots of fruits and vegetables and other whole natural plant foods like beans and raw nuts. If you do that, you'll be giving your colon everything it needs to cleanse itself and maintain itself. Most colon cleansers are based on fiber of one kind or another, but plants are the source of fiber, and they still know how to make it, and there is no shortage of it in natural foods. It's possible that some of our plant foods don't have as much vitamins and minerals as they used to have, but they certainly have as much fiber as ever. I pretty much follow the advice of Dr. John Tilden who said, "Mind your own business, and let your colon mind its." Keep in mind that I do sometimes recommend digestive aid products, such as digestive enzymes and probiotics. And I am very pleased to see our new GI Factors become available, which is for people who have colitis and Crohn's disease. But as far as a general "cleanser" for you to take just because you are 75 years old? Forget about it. Just eat healthy. Another way I look at it is this: I'm sure you are like most people, including myself, that there is a limited amount of money you can spend on nutritional supplements. So, I wouldn't want to use up your limited resources on a colon cleanser, when there are more valuable things you could be taking to protect your health.
