Question No.: 16890
Submitted By: Rose Moore
Submitted on: October 1, 2004
Subject: Fosamex

Question:
Does taking Fosamex take care of the need for elemental calcium? I read that regular calcum does not meet that need.

Dr. Cinque's Answer:
Fosamex is a drug that cripples certain cells in bones that break down the bone, and that's how it makes the bones stronger. But it's a totally separate thing from calcium. I'm not big on Fosamex because it's a very caustic, irritating drug. I think it's a better plan to eat a very nutritious diet and exercise and rely on safe dietary supplements like calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin K.
