Questions and AnswersQuestion No.: 16249 Submitted By: mab Submitted on: October 27, 2003 Subject: Fosamex Question: I just began taking Fosamex two weeks ago and have noticed bloating and weight gain. Is this possibly from this drug? I am thinking of discontinuing and supplementing instead with Vitamin K. How much and what kind would you suggest? I am 50 years old, perimenopausal, and was just below normal for bone density in the hips. I run, weight train, and take my vitamins. I have run marathons and 1/2 marathons the last several years, and it has been suggested that this may have contributed to the marginal reading. Any insights would be so appreciated!!! Michael Ann Dr. Cinque's Answer: Yes, it could be related to the Fosamex. I think that switching to high dose Vitamin K would be a good thing for you, especially since your bone density problem is not too severe, and you are doing a lot of other things that are helpful. However, if I were you, I would ease up on the marathon running. Several studies have shown that excessive running promotes bone loss in women. Regarding the dose of Vitamin K, I recommend that you take at least 3 mg daily. The good thing about Vitamin K is that it not only drives calcium into bone, it keeps it out of arteries. |
