Niacin 500 mg 100 capsules

Price: $9.95

The nutrient of choice to reduce cholesterol

Niacin, in doses of one to three grams per day, has been shown to be a safe and effective substance to reduce serum cholesterol levels. Niacin deficiency can cause the debilitating disease pellagra. Niacin releases histamines and causes capillary dilation which may cause a harmless flushing of the skin. This effect can be lessened by taking the niacin after eating or by starting with a low dose (50-100 mg) and increasing it gradually as tolerance develops. Diabetics should take niacin only under the supervision of their physician. CAUTION: It has been recommended that niacin in doses over 500-1,000 mg be taken only under the supervision of a physician. Niacin in high doses can cause a harmless tingling, itching, or reddening of the skin. These symptoms usually rapidly resolve with continued use, but they may be intolerable in a few people. In some people, high-dose niacin may cause elevations of liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, GGTP), and/or worsening of glucose tolerance. Niacin is contraindicated in people with liver disease, diabetes, or with a history of ulcers. In these cases, we suggest switching to inositol hexanicotinate (IHN) which has not been known to cause those problems.
